BIO

Brian Hinnigan (b.1966, Coldstream) is a Scottish artist currently living and working in the Scottish Borders. He works primarily with oil paint on both canvas and gesso board exploring the natural world, human experiences, and emotive topics with a connection to his local environment, and a use of colour and pattern influenced by woven textiles.

Predominantly semi-abstract in style, his paintings are intrinsically connected to the world around us, with a strong balance of depth and light. His intuitive approach to painting invites a sense of freedom and invokes an emotional response through the simplicity of colour, line, and form unique to his work, and the themes within.

“My paintings question what can be seen in the world, opening our mind and imagination to what lies beyond the physical.”

He studied Fashion Textile Design at Brighton before carving a successful international career as a woven textile designer and design director, creating fabric collections for several renowned luxury fashion textile labels for over 30 years.

Always creative from a young age; art has been a constant source of inspiration throughout his career, honing his skills as a colourist and designer, and now an inherent part of his artwork.

The early 2020’s, amidst a changing textile industry, felt like the right moment to reframe his career, and focus on a new purpose. Investing more time into his lifelong passion, and pursuing his love of art he shifted his focus from the corporate environment, and became a full-time artist in 2022.

Working daily in his studio, alongside his furry companion Milou, he creates vibrant paintings with a distinct use of colour and pattern.
